Family Guide to Working with Schools

With budget cuts, larger class sizes, and more homework, families with kids that need extra help, IEP services can often feel overwhelmed and frustrated. Families Like Ours and Treehouse have joined together to help you with all this and more. Join us for The Parent Institute on Saturday May 14th and learn how you can advocate for your kid(s) without creating an adversarial relationship with the school.

Who should attend? Pre and post adoptive families, foster families, and kinship families.
 
How much does it cost? Nothing! Seats are limited so don't waiting. Through a special grant, we're able to provide this training at no cost to families.

Special Education Resources

Special Education and the Individualized Education Program exist to ensure that children with special needs receive a free appropriate public education - FAPE. It is a complex area beyond the scope of Families Like Ours. We instead will refer you to some excellent resources on IEP's, FAPE, IDEA and specialized education:

Let’s face it. Parenting isn’t easy. Actually it can be more than trying at times. Then you add in all the aspects of adoption and foster care and your head starts spinning! Not to worry, we’ve got you covered. As part of our support network we actively list workshops and educational programs on our community calendar, so that’s the first place you should start. For specific programs from Families Like Ours … Outside the Box Skills and Support, for Outside the Box Children and Families PROGRAM GOAL: Help you find and enhance the individual parenting styles that work best for you, and your children.
