First, let's get some basics out of the way. When working with an LGBT&Q youth, it isn't about sex it is about the individual. We're also not talking about just teens, but kids from 5 – 17 years of age; yes we said as young as five years old.

Families Like Ours is highly recommending attending the annual Gender Odyssey conference August 5- 7, 2011 in Seattle. This conference provides support for families raising Gender Non-conforming (GID) and Transgender children. This is one of the only opportunities in the country to find valuable resources, information and networking opportunities. Gender Odyssey Family provides real tools to support and encourage your child’s gender self-discovery.
 
Daily FLO’s SAFE project is called upon to help meet the needs of LGBT&Q foster youth ranging from 4 – 17 years of age. In turn we are calling upon the families and professionals we work with to provide safe, nurturing and affirming families for these at-risk youth. FLO is recommending this conference for both families and professionals alike. Current statistics indicate that 14.5% (up to 1,700) Washington State foster youth are self identifying as LGBT&Q (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning) youth. It is vital that families and professionals fully understand the complexities and unmet needs of gender non-conforming and transgender youth.

Focus Group reminder for tonight 6/14/10

Hello all, just a quick reminder:

We've been asked to work on a research project to gather information about Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered families seeking to adopt children for the foster care system. Part of this is collecting information from you, the families that are currently going through the process or have completed an adoption. This information will be used to develop cultural guides to improve LGBT knowledge, awareness and sensitivity for professionals.

We're needing at least 5 families, more if possible to attend the focus group on Monday June 14th from 6:00PM - 7:30PM at our office in Seattle (600 Stewart Street - corner of 6th & Stewart).
