The birth family can come and take them away at any time, even after you adopt

Misinformation: The birth family can come and take them away at any time, even after you adopt

Reality: Wrong. The goal of the foster care system is to reunite the children in care with their birth family if at all possible and to protect the children in care. If it becomes necessary to seek an adoptive family for a child, then the birth family is no longer part of the permanence plan. The birth parent’s legal rights are terminated, allowing an adoptive family to finalize an adoption. Once the adoption is completed your legal rights are the same is as if you birthed the child. A long lost relative cannot just appear one day and over turn the adoption provided all laws have been followed correctly.
