Community Event that may have an interest to families and professionals, i.e. fire safety programs, bike helmet checks, chance to speak to government officials, adoption and foster month celebrations.
Families Like Ours is highly recommending attending the annual
Gender Odyssey conference August 5- 7, 2011 in Seattle. This conference provides support for families raising Gender Non-conforming (GID) and Transgender children. This is one of the only opportunities in the country to find valuable resources, information and networking opportunities. Gender Odyssey Family provides real tools to support and encourage your child’s gender self-discovery.
Daily
FLO’s SAFE project is called upon to help meet the needs of
LGBT&Q foster youth ranging from 4 – 17 years of age. In turn we are calling upon the families and professionals we work with to provide safe, nurturing and affirming families for these at-risk youth. FLO is recommending this conference for both families and professionals alike. Current statistics indicate that 14.5% (up to 1,700) Washington State foster youth are self identifying as LGBT&Q (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning) youth. It is vital that families and professionals fully understand the complexities and unmet needs of gender non-conforming and transgender youth.
Executive Director
Families Like Ours, Inc

In an early morning call today I was asked how the Seattle Pride event was yesterday (Sunday June 26, 2011), my simple response was GREAT!
I'd like to thank our booth team, John Coake (a FLO board member), Stephanie & Jennifer M. and Andrea C. Stephanie, Jennifer and Andrea are all pre-adoptive families and alumni of
FLO's adoption & foster care training. Thank you, we couldn't have done Pride without your help. Several times Conrad and I both overheard people commenting about how nice it was to talk with someone actually going through the process themselves. Great job!
The FLO team staffed the information booth for eight hours giving out nearly 400 adoption and foster care informational items. Including 270
GSBA directories,
AdoptUSKids “Answering the Call”

booklet's and Dave Thomas Adoption guides. That's amazing!
What was even more amazing was the amount of families that dropped by to “check in” with us, all the kids seem to have a fun time. It never ceases to amaze me the reach that FLO has; I think sometimes we tend to forget the impact FLO makes until we're at an event like this. Families from four states and Canada were able to reconnect with FLO.
Come and join us at Seattle Pride located at Seattle Center this Sunday June 26, 2011. Our information booth will be located directly across from the Seattle Children's Theater - see the attached location map. Drop by and get us caught up, get a picture taken, find out more about the 1,700 LGBT&Q WA foster youth that need forever families!
